An ode to a bay leaf
By: Duncan Carel
It’s spicy smell of
Cinnamon and ginger
In a dance of prefect harmony
The leaves green like a newly born olive
The light brown veins
Cover and crisscross it like a map
When dried out
It feels like a leather book
It is brittle, yet flexible
It has the power to make
Foods come alive,
The flavor makes a fire in the food
That is soft and warm,
soothing and comfortable,
Brings back memories
It has the power to kill you raw
But cooked it’s essence in food makes you feel alive
